The S.K. & Udupi District Co-operative Fish Marketing Federation was established in the year 1954 with the undivided S.K. district as the jurisdiction. Following the reorganisation of the coastal districts, the jurisdiction has been identified to cover both S.K. and Udupi districts. Late R.D. Mendon, Kapu was the Founder President and Late S.K. Amin, Ex MLA was the Founder Secretary. He Federation has a paid up Share Capital of Rs. 3.03 crores of which Rs. 2.27 crores is of Govt. of Karnataka, Rs. 5.78 lakh of Member FCS and Rs. 69.00 lakhs of individual member fishermen.
The federation has the govt. of Karnataka as ‘A' Class Member, 74 Primary Fishermen Co-op Societies covering about 80,000 fishermen as ‘B' Class Members 13,014 individual fishermen as ‘C' membersand about 7,504 & 797 individual fishermen as “D” and “E” members.
The federation has given top priority for providing financial assistance for the welfare of fishermen and development of fisheries in Udupi and DK Districts. Taking into consideration the various needs of fishermen, the federation strives to improve the conditions of the fisher folk in various ways.
The coastal region is rich in sea wealth, in the form of fisheries. Karnataka is blessed with an extensive coastline which is known for its excellent fisheries potential. The state has a large fisherman community which depends on fishing for livelihood. These people belong to traditional fishing communities and most of them lack the education and financial backing to compete effectively in the modern commercial scenario.

The Federation arranges prawn marketing of member fishing boats. This activity is carried out in Mangalore and Hungaracutta Fishing Harbours . The members prawn catches is purchased by the Federation and sold to the Buyers who send it for processors for export to foreign country. The Federation take the responsibility of collecting money from the buyers and giving it to the members. The Federation gets 6% commission form the boat owners.
The Federation has two Nos. of 12 K.L. Diesel Transportation Tankers in which subsidized diesel is transported from the I.O.C. Terminal at Panumbur to the Diesel Bunks at Malpe, Mangalore & Hejamady Fishing Harbours.
The Federation is marketing the Prawn catches of its members boats in Mangalore & Hungarcutta Fishing Harbours. It supplies tax free diesel Quota of Fisheries Department to the Fishing Boat owners.
